Things I’m excited to do this season

The Magic of Santa

Last Christmas passed in a bit of a whirl. I wasn’t comfortable enough in the city yet to figure out where we should go. This year, however, I feel much more prepared. There are a few things I’m looking forward to sharing with Elliot, now 3 years old, who is just starting to get Christmas.

Vancouver Christmas Market

We’ve actually managed to get to this one already. A German-inspired market, it reminds me of the Cologne Christmas Market along the South Bank in London. Wooden chalet stands offer waffles on a stick, really good sausages with sauerkraut, baked apples, wooden toys and ornaments. The carousel was the biggest hit, however, Elliot was squealing about it as soon as he saw it all lit up from the street outside.

Until 24 December, in the plaza next to Queen Elizabeth Theatre, downtown Vancouver. Tickets prices vary from $2-$5, children 6 and under are free. You get free re-entry to the market with your ticket purchase.

The Magic of Santa

A production by the same people behind The Great Big Boo, this is the one show we’re going to get to this year. I was so impressed with the properly child-friendly organisation of the Halloween show, I am really excited to share this with Elliot. Be ready to spend time after the show meeting the actors and general merriment. My son is not a sit still kind of child, and he loved the Halloween show. I really rate these guys.

Four shows on 21 & 22 December at PNE Pacific Coliseum. Tickets are $22.50 per seat, in other words children’s tickets are the same price as adults.

Festival of Lights at Van Dusen Gardens

I remember visiting Van Dusen Gardens at Christmas when I was young, but mostly because we all tried roasted chestnuts and decided they were best for warming your hands but not for eating. I’ve heard from other mums that this year is truly magical, but it is worth going as early as you can manage and buying tickets ahead of time.

Until 1 January. Tickets are $7.75-$14.25, with a family rate of $32.50, discounts for members.

    1. Thanks for stopping by! I’ve been hearing everyone is really enjoying it this year. Those waffles on a stick are amazing – might have to go back for those alone…
