We read books everyday, Elliot and I. We curl up in his bed at bedtime, or in the morning when one of us has gotten a bit wound up. When we’re waiting at the doctor’s office, or at a restaurant. The iPad is great, but nothing holds his attention like a book being read to him.
His favourites these days are Julia Donaldson books like The Gruffalo, Jack and the Flum Flum tree, and Monkey Puzzle. A Visitor for Bear has made a great impression, and the gentle Let It Fall captures the feeling of my favourite season so perfectly it gives me goosebumps when I read it. Emily Gravett’s Again was such a surprise for both of us the first time, it made Elliot’s eyes wide as saucers.
The thing that threads all these books together is they made their way to our house in a Mail a Tale box.
I first read about Mail a Tale in a tiny sidebar box in Today’s Parent magazine. Being in love with anything that arrives in the post, I was on their website in moments, signing us up. We’ve loved every box we’ve received since.
Mail a Tale pick their books with recommendations from parents, educators and guest authors each month, going through both new books and old ones. You get an email notifying you your book selections are ready, and you can check to make sure you’re not getting a duplicate of a book you already own.
One of the things I especially love about their service is I know I’m getting a steady supply of great kids’ books without having to do a load of research. As they have Elliot’s information on file, they adjust the book selections as he grows up. I think this is one to file under great gifts for kids too – you can buy subscriptions for one, three or six months, or even a whole year of books.
Now, my wonderful readers, Mail a Tale is offering the chance to win a book box filled with holiday books worth $50. That is pretty amazing.

I’ve seen that book, it looks lovely!
Robert Munch is a favourite – any of his stories!
My little guy loves the Cat in the Hat… gets me to read it to him at least once a day !
My daughter’s all time favourite book is Snuggle Puppy by Sandra Boynton.
We’re loving “A Fly Went By”

Thanks for hosting this giveaway, Erin! I love the concept of Mail a Tale. Sprout gets excited when we get a package in the mail, which happens weekly, but it’s nearly always for me. He’d be thrilled to get regular mail himself, I think. & though I do buy him books pretty often, having a regular infusion of great books would make my life easier.
It’s hard to pick a favourite. Sprout really loves books with regular rhyme & meter–it helps him memorize the words. He asks for PD Eastman’s oldie, ‘I’d Teach My Dog A Lot Of Words’ a lot right now. I think *my* favourite is probably ‘Click, Clack, Moo’. IF you haven’t seen it, you should check that one out!
My daughters favorite book is The Gruffulo by Julia Donaldson (well really she loves any book by Julia Donaldson). She also really likes I love you, stinky face by Lisa McCourt.

We love Julia Donaldson in our house too. Anything with vaguely ‘naughty’ words is a hit too!
What an awesome giveaway, Erin. I’m so excited to check out Mail a Tale as we’re huge fans of anything that arrives in the post too.
My always favourite children’s books are Miss Rumphius and Good Dog, Carl. As for Miss G, she’s been really digging a classic lately – The Very Hungry Caterpillar. 🙂
Q loves so many different books at any given time but right now some of the more popular ones are any of the Splat the Cat ones, all of the Skippyjon Jones books ( hilarious by the way!), and his Jedi reading books. He also loves the Zoomer books. Have you read “Charlie Cook’s Favourite book” by Emily Donaldson? Awesome book!
That should be Julia Donadson, not Emily, haha. 😉
We are reading Big Red Barn on repeat these days! Thanks for the great giveaway!
Any of Julia Donaldson’s books are favorites in our house, especially the fact that if you look close enough characters from her other books tend to appear in each book. My daughter gets a real kick out of finding the other characters.
We’ve been reading My Little Pony for the past 2 weeks! I need to HIDE them so we could read something else!
Pandora (It’s a book about a cat), The Gruffalo, The Scarecrow of Oz
My Granddaughter loves any and all books.
My son right now loves Sandra Boyntons “Bellybutton” Book. But two cute ones for parents are “It’s a book”, and “Goodnight iPad” 🙂
Oh gosh, I have to pick just one kid’s book? hehe! Curious George, Peanuts, the Oh David books.
We read a lot too and she has a varied and diverse love of books. Along with the classic Dr Seuss Books, she loves things like Press Here by Herve Tullet and books by Audrey Wood.
As a bibliophile I love that my boys live books too. Right now Father Christmas Letters is the favourite.
Sterling has about a million favourite books, but I think his absolute faves (at the moment) are: the Elephant and Piggie Books by Mo Willems, the Pete the Cat books, and Mog by Judith Kerr.

Oh yes, we read Mog too. And The Tiger Who Came To Tea too.
My three year old son’s favourite book is currently A Pirate’s Night Before Christmas by Philip Yates. He loves pirates and we’re prepping for Christmas excitement at the same time! Very cute!
Author
Oh my, my three year old boy is also really into pirates and Christmas. Must check that one out!
Marmaduke Duck and the Marmalade Jam
It’s Not Fair is my 4 year old favourite book right now.
Just discovered your blog. Love it! Favorite book in our house right now is: My Friends by Taro Gomi.
