Best tutorials for doing liquid eyeliner

If you know me in the wild, as it were, you know I wear black liquid liner pretty much every day. It’s my thing. Some people spend forever on their hair, on their nails, wear red lipstick every day – for me, it’s the eyeliner.

I’m by no means an expert on it. Some weeks go by where I feel like I never get it quite right. Just finding the right liner is a pain – right now I’m using Stila All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner, which is one of those felt lip pens. I’ve tried the MAC version, which is useless, and I used to love the Bourjois Liner Feutre, but they must have changed the formulation because it has become equally useless. The Stila one is pretty good, but not perfect – I find it does not last all day unless you use a primer.

In terms of technique, I like these two tutorials, both by UK make-up artists. Slightly different in approach, but both close to my age. Let me tell you, watching 20 year olds apply eyeliner on youtube does not help me, as their skin doesn’t move around. Lisa Eldridge uses gel liner in her tutorial, and I’ve tried the stuff and found it very hard to work with.

  1. Have you tried the Bobbi Brown gel liner? I am absolutely smitten with it – goes on so smoothly (with the BB brush, at least).

    1. Oooo that’s good to know. Do you find you can get a sharp line with it? That was always my trouble, the MAC one felt crumbly and difficult to control.

  2. Eyeliner is my thing too, but not all the time nowadays. Bobbi Brown is my favourite too, but currently using L’Oreal and I like it. Love the smokey eyes look.
